Techniques

Dana Fine Arts uses traditional oil painting methods, emphasizing careful, layered construction of the painting from the initial ground through to the final varnish. The composition of the painting medium is altered as the painting is executed to maximize stability and adhesion. Wet blends and fine glazing are integral to the work. DFA has also adapted certain scenic art techniques, such as masking, stencilling, sponging, etc., to the oil medium. Upon completion, paintings are stored for six months to a year, varnished, and then exhibited. Some paintings are fully conceptualized and technically planned before painting even begins; some evolve with rough guidance from rough ideas; and some are completely spontaneous and paint themselves. I work from my mind, from sketches drawn by hand or on the computer, from photographs, and from life. DFA respects the tradition of oil painting, strives to master its craftsmanship, and works to evolve the medium.
